Webcam

A webcam that transmits images in real time over the internet is particularly useful for observing our bees. This allows us to keep an eye on the bees' activity at the entrance anytime and anywhere, and can provide us with a wealth of information about the colony's health and the forage flow.

To build our own webcam, we need several parts and devices. We need a camera module to capture the images. This is connected to a computer, in our case a Raspberry Pi, which records and processes the images. Next, we need an internet connection via Wi-Fi or a cellular network so that the video can be transmitted. This requires a Wi-Fi router to which the computer can connect.

The Raspberry Pi can also be expanded with a cellular module, making the Wi-Fi router obsolete. By adding an autonomous power supply, the webcam could also be used as a wildlife camera.

There are now a variety of camera modules available for the Raspberry Pi, with different resolutions and interchangeable lenses. However, assembling and installing a webcam with a Raspberry Pi is basically the same.
